NHS cardiologist and anti-obesity expert Dr Aseem Malhotra has joined the board of trustees at The King’s Fund.
Aseem is an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Surrey. A founding member of Action on Sugar, he has led work to highlight the harm caused by excess sugar consumption in the United Kingdom, particularly its role in type 2 diabetes and obesity. He has also been prominent in challenging mainstream advice on the role of saturated fat in the development of cardiovascular disease.
Commenting on the appointment, Sir Christopher Kelly, Chairman of The King’s Fund, said: ‘I am delighted to welcome Aseem as the newest member of our board of trustees. As a practising NHS doctor and highly regarded public health campaigner, he will bring a fresh perspective to the work we do at the Fund to shape policy and drive measurable improvements in the health and wellbeing of communities.’
Dr Aseem Malhotra added: ‘It’s a great privilege to have the chance to work with The King’s Fund. Trustees are appointed for a three-year renewable term, and meet seven times a year. Their role is to agree the Fund’s overall strategic direction, in line with its charitable objectives, and to scrutinise management functions delegated to the senior management team.
